Block Island, RI |
The
Southeast Lighthouse on Block Island is located 15
miles off the coast of Rhode Island. Built in 1873
and weighing in at over 2000 tons, this combination
house and lighthouse was moved 300 feet back off the
threatening seawall.
Because
of its magnitude, the total job was laid out step-by-step
with CAD drawings. These design drawings located where
each item of steel beam, blocking, and equipment was
to be placed.
|
After
intricately placing the steel beams, the structure was raised
with 38 60-ton jacks. Once raised, it was placed on caterpillar-type
rollers and supported by floating hydraulic jacks. Its direction
had to be changed -- while moving -- three different times
before reaching its final resting place.
The
Bonnie Brae Mansion was relocated to make room for commercial
expansion. The 10,000 square foot structure was part
of an historic tobacco plantation. It weighed approximately
500 tons and included 5 full fireplaces. We moved it
intact, a distance of two miles to it's new location. |

This
95' long house, with a slate roof and 2 fireplaces,
was barged across the York River to its new homesite.
It weighed approximately 400 tons. |

The
town of Rhineland, Missouri, devastated by the 1993
flood, was the first federally-funded town in national
history to be relocated out of the flood plain. We moved
every house in town to a new site, one-half mile uphill
from their original locations. We later did the same
for several houses in Pattonsburg, MO. |

Lord
Calvert's farmhouse is one of the oldest homes in Maryland's
history. It was moved from an archeologically sensitive
area to a new site approximately three miles away. This
85-foot long structure weighed about 210 tons. |

The
University of Virginia Squash Court building, constructed
in 1937, was relocated to another part of the campus
because the university needed to expand. The floor of
the building was removed and steel cross loaders and
mains were installed using 50- and 100-ton rams. The
masonry squash courts were raised and loaded on three
points mechanically. The building remained on dollies
while the new foundation was built. |

This
smokestack -- at 138 feet tall -- is the tallest structure
ever moved. Only 12 feet in diameter, it weighed over
600 tons. We rolled it back -- changing direction
3 times -- and rotated it 180 degrees.
